3 Unique Things to Do in the Big Island of Hawaii

The Big Island is the biggest of the Hawaiian islands and offers the most variety for unique things to explore in a single island. If the island is on your travel list, here are 3 unique things you can do just on this island.

Here are the top 3 things that you can’t do on the other islands.

Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is a must see when you’re in the Big Island of Hawaii

The Volcanoes National Park covers the 2 of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The park offers many activities from day hikes to Crater Rim drive. It’s a 40-50 minute drive from Hilo and you’ll either need a car or buy a tour that picks you up from the hotel. I recommend planning at least 4-6 hours at the park to make the most of it.

Kona Coffee Tasting

Kona coffee is rich and smooth. It’s the only coffee I can drink black!

True Kona coffee is unique to the Kona slopes with volcanic soil and evening cloud covers. The coffee is rich, smooth and packs a pleasant aroma. While you’re in the Big Island go tour at least one of the coffee farms and take a sip of this unique coffee blend. Even if you’re not a coffee lover, you might be surprised by how smooth and pleasant this coffee tastes.

Mauna Kea Observatories

The Big Island hosts some of the world’s largest telescopes so if you enjoy stargazing (and who doesn’t?) be sure to visit the Mauna Kea Observatories. You can drive up to the Mauna Kea Summit on a 4WD during daylight or take a tour of the observatory by bus. Once you’re there, you can view the night sky from Hawaii’s tallest peak.
